14 October 2022
The Minister of Employment of Labour has extended the Consolidated Main Agreement for the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC) to non-parties within the industry. All employers must comply with the agreement as of 17 October 2022. In addition to the Main Agreement, the two agreements regulating administrative and dispute levies and the Plastics Industry Main Agreement have also been extended. The agreements shall be effective until the 30th of June, 2024.
The agreements regulate, amongst other things, the hours of work and wages applicable to employees within this industry. Should a company not be able to comply with the compulsory terms provided for within the agreement, it can apply for an exemption from such provisions.
Any person bound by the agreement may apply for exemption from any provision of the agreement. The agreement refers to the fact that should it be extended to non-parties, such non-parties may apply to their respective Regional Bargaining Council for exemption.
